Five Questions To Ask Your Builder Before a Renovation

A renovation is a major project and can be very disruptive to your life, before you commit to a renovation here are five questions you should ask.

1 – How long have you been doing this?

Renovations are tricky propositions at the best of times. Your contractor doesn’t always know what is in your existing walls, working with someone who has done this several times, who is qualified, and who has a proven track record takes much of the risk out of the project. At CityWide Homes, we have 30 years of experience in the construction industry and have built several homes. Our trades people are certified in their disciplines, and their work is of the highest quality.

2 – How much will this cost and how long will it take?

You need to establish a budget and a timeline. This process will be disruptive if you are living in the space that is being renovated, and you need to know how long the disruption will last, as well as how much it will cost.

3 – Can I stay in my house?

Should you stay or should you go? If leaving your home is an option, it could allow the crew more access to the property, which could speed up the timelines, conversely, if there are hours they can’t work, it could slow things down. Understanding exactly what disruptions will happen will help you decide whether you should stay in your home. We can advise you on what your options are and what would result in the least disruption to your life.

4 – What else do I need to do?

When you already have walls opened up, it is far easier to do certain structural work than it is once drywall and flooring are installed. If you’ve got an unexplained draft or a leak, this is the time to solve the problem once and for all.

5 -What other projects have you completed?

A good contractor will have not only a portfolio of their work, but also will have testimonials from satisfied customers available for you.
